Dr. Babak Soltannia

Biography

Babak Soltannia is currently an NSERC Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus under the co-supervision of Dr. Dana Grecov and Dr. Abbas Milani working on the project entitled “Studying the Effect of Ligand Chain for Friction Reduction and Wear-resistance Enhancement of Environmentally Friendly Functionalized Nano-enhanced Greases”. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, in 2021. Prior to joining the department, he completed his second M.Sc., in Civil Engineering at Dalhousie University. He has received multiple international, national and provincial awards including NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, partial IBM Scholarship, Alexander Graham Bell NSERC Doctoral Scholarship, AITF, QE II Graduate Scholarship, Government of Alberta Graduate Citizenship Award, and appreciation certificate from the Government of Alberta for his services to Albertans. He knows English, Russian, Persian fluently, and he has just started learning French. He was President of MEGSA during 2015-16, and the University of Alberta GSA President and Vice-Chair of ab-GPAC during 2017-18, and an APEGA E.I.T. He taught Vibrations to undergraduate students as a sessional instructor at Dalhousie University, during winter 2020. He worked on Keystone and Coastal GasLink pipeline stress analysis, as well as Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) for Wood Group as a Pipeline Stress Engineer during spring/summer 2020.
